Road Tested: Laura and Friends

Hey guys, Here are some tunes I have been road testing (as in literally listening to in the car, not some sort of metaphorical road-test):

Thanks to WeLikeItIndie.com for hosting these two tunes by Bayside.

Bayside-Duality

Bayside-Carry On

Both of them are post-punk/punk tunes with hooks that just keep on coming. Bayside have had some ups and some downs, the story of how they lost their drummer Beatz contrasts their successes (number 4 Top on Independent Albums, number 75 on the Billboard 200). Maybe you have heard of them, maybe not. But take a moment either way to check out those two tracks.

cemusic say basia bulat is pretty effing great… but I can’t agree, the songs are good, but they just didn’t grab me in the way the rest of the tracks on this road test did. Maybe they will speak to you, but they didn’t to me.

This track on the other hand is WEEIIIRD (FreeIndie.Com provide the music): Head over to FreeIndie and listen to HaHa by Mates Of State. Two very awkward looking but extremely talented musicians joined together to create something that just shouldnt work, but does anyway. It bounces around genres, meter and most probably your head, for days and days. Listen to it but dont blame me when you have it stuck in your head. Blame them

I found Black Mags by the Cool Kids totally forgettable, though full disclosure: not the biggest fan of the genre. Even so I usually can enjoy a song a few times, but in this case after the first listen I couldn’t help but skip past it.

But maybe that isnt their fault. The song right after Black Mags on that particular playlist was: Laura Marling’s Ghosts, followed by Typical. For some reason we seem to be inundated with talented young british female vocalists right now, I’m not going to complain as long as lyrics like this keep popping out

“I’ll keep on going I’ve got nothing to lose, I gave up morals when I took up you, and it’s boring to hear of another young truth, and what a typically shit thing to do” -Typical, Laura Marling.

Excuse the swedish, but thanks to 24hours for letting me find out about such an amazing talent. My fearless companion tells me he has known about Laura for months, he was holding out on me! Nevertheless an awesome artist.

That’s all for the road test, but I can’t finish up without pointing out how jealous I am of all of you who snared tickets to see The Cold War Kids tonight at the Enmore in sydney. (not to mention anyone who was at splendour)

In recognition of my jealousy here is Hang Me Up To Dry as served up by Bon Ton

And finally in a more-news-than-new-music item, how ridiculously cool does this sound. David Byrne and Brian Eno, they have worked together before (as in before I was born… *cough*) and it seems like a cool idea, can’t wait.

(Also check out David Byrne on Toejam by The Bristol Port Authority or BPA, it’s fatboy slim’s new project and it’s… weird in the most awesome possible way)
